Scottsdale was settled in 1888 by U.S. Army Chaplin Winfield Scott, his wife Helen, and his brother George Washington Scott and was originally called Orangedale due to its citrus groves. He purchased 640 acres for $3.50 which is equivalent to $100 in today’s dollars (2018). It encompasses approximately 184 square miles and is bordered by Phoenix, Paradise Valley, and Carefree to its west, the Tonto National Forest to the North, Fountain Hills to the east, and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to the east and south. The New York Times described as a “desert version of Miami’s South Beach”. It is the Spring Training home of the San Francisco Giants, and is a destination of tourists from around the world due to its sites, attractions, outdoor activities, and shopping venues.
